Sylvan Park School centennial celebration August 31

Sylvan Park School (4801 Utah Avenue) turns 100 years old this year, and the school is hosting a parade on Friday, August 31, at 10 a.m. to celebrate its centennial. A program entitled, “Sylvan Park School: Past & Present,” will be held in the school’s historic auditorium following the parade from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. All parents, alumni and community members are welcome, and refreshments will be served in the library. Mark your calendars and plan to be there to celebrate this historic event.

Neighbor and school PTO member Judy Beasley also passed along the following message: “Several SPNA members have been an immense help in planning this—Rob Stack with his photographic skills, Mark Lambert in lining up antique vehicles for the parade, Yvonne Eaves as an alumni and with information from the West Nashville Founder’s Museum. I really appreciate all of their help.”

The event is free, and parking is available at the Free Will Baptist Church at 4701 Wyoming Avenue. No parking will be available at the school after 9:15 a.m. because the roads surrounding the campus will be closed for the parade.

Current, future mayors visit Sylvan Park for Night Out Against Crime

Both candidates in Nashville’s upcoming mayoral runoff election, Bob Clement (top) and Karl Dean (bottom) attended last Tuesday’s Night Out Against Crime celebration in Sylvan Park and made brief remarks. State Senator Doug Henry is in the foreground of the photo of Clement as well.

Current Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell also attended the event near the end of the evening and thanked local residents for helping make Sylvan Park one of the city’s finest neighborhoods.

Early voting for the runoff election begins August 22 and ends on September 6. Election Day is Tuesday, Sept. 11. The Davidson County Election Commission site has more details.

Puppy Found

Neighbor Alison Kirk has found a puppy and is looking for its owner:

I found a dachsund in my driveway this morning, wearing a collar. Is there any way to circulate a “found” notice to members of the SPNA in hopes that we can find this sweet pup’s home?

Great music lined up for SPNA Night Out Against Crime

Sylvan Park’s Night Out Against Crime will feature several great musicians who live in or near the neighborhood. Neighborhood Watch captain Doug Eckert reports:

“Gail Davies lives in our neighborhood and is going to sing a few songs for us as part of this. She is such a legend in this town for her songwriting, singing and producing, I can’t believe we are this lucky. She has a voice that could sing the phone book and mesmerize you.”

Kathy Chiavola, Butch Baldisari, Larry Reynolds and Rob Stanley are all scheduled to perform, too. Don’t miss this free celebration at the corner of 44th Avenue and Wyoming Avenue tomorrow night (August 7).

SPNA Night Out Against Crime tomorrow night (Aug. 7)

Sylvan Park’s annual Night Out Against Crime celebration is tomorrow night! Don’t miss the Sylvan Park Neighborhood Association’s largest sponsored event of the year, attended by hundreds of residents as well as public safety personnel, elected officials and candidates for public office.

This year the free celebration returns to the Sylvan Park Neighborhood streets, with music and fun and hot dogs for everyone. It will be held this year at the corner of 44th Avenue and Wyoming Avenue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, August 7.

Over the years, Sylvan Park’s Night Out Against Crime has become a “neighborhood cookout” with free hot dogs, chips and soft drinks for the attendees. Members of Nashville’s police, fire, Sheriff and emergency services workforce will be on hand throughout the evening to share tips on crime prevention and receive the thanks of a very grateful neighborhood.

The Sylvan Park celebration is part of a national one that sends the message that the real solutions to issues of safety and quality of life lie in community standards, cooperation and action. It is a perfect opportunity to meet new neighbors, reacquaint with old neighbors, recommit to working together and celebrate the accomplishments of the past year.
